Reptile Care 101: What Every New Owner Should Know

Reptiles are fascinating, low-maintenance pets — but they have very specific needs that differ greatly from cats and dogs. Getting the basics right from day one is key to a long, healthy life for your reptile.

1. Research Your Species Every reptile is different. A bearded dragon, leopard gecko, and ball python all have unique temperature, humidity, lighting, and diet requirements. Always research your specific species thoroughly before bringing one home.

2. Set Up the Right Enclosure Reptiles are ectotherms — they rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature. Your enclosure must have a temperature gradient with a warm basking side and a cooler side so your reptile can self-regulate.

3. Lighting is Critical Most reptiles need UVB lighting to synthesize Vitamin D3 and absorb calcium properly. Without it, they can develop metabolic bone disease. Replace UVB bulbs every 6 months even if they still appear to work.

4. Humidity & Substrate Get the humidity right for your species. Tropical reptiles like high humidity; desert species prefer dry conditions. Use appropriate substrate — coconut fiber, reptile carpet, or bioactive soil depending on the species.

5. Feeding & Nutrition

  • Insectivores (geckos, bearded dragons) need gut-loaded insects dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements.
  • Carnivores (snakes) typically eat frozen/thawed rodents.
  • Herbivores need a variety of fresh leafy greens and vegetables.

6. Handling & Socialization Start slow with handling — let your reptile settle in for 1–2 weeks before regular interaction. Always support their body fully and keep sessions short at first.
